Freaky Fruits for Halloween Decorations, Snacks and Cocktails
When it comes to Halloween, carving pumpkins usually comes to mind for family decorating fun. I recently started playing around with using exotic fruits for Halloween crafts. For example, I used rambutan, which looks like a sea urchin, but looks and tastes like a lychee when it is cut open. The green Buddha hand is another great example. This citron fruit has long scary fingers that will conjure any child’s imagination. Adults will be facsinated as well, especially after a couple of my cocktails (see bottom of post). I used fruits from the folks at Melissa’s Produce, although you can find them at Gelson’s , Bristol Farms and Asian Grocery stores if you have one nearby.
Carve your white pumpkin just as you normally would, but give it a little flare with freaky fruit. You can use rambutan for more vivid eyes. Slice a cap off the top of a rambuttan to expose the soft white flesh. Cut a slit into the center of the flesh to make room for a kidney bean in each rambutan to simulate eye balls.
Place the rambutan into the eye holes of the pumpkin. The rambutan and kidney bean eyes will give the appearance of eye lashes and eye balls. Place a Buddha’s Hand on top of the pumpkin to simulate crazy hair.
Baby Fruit Goblins
Cut the longans in half, using a circular cutting motion, so that the seed appears when you cut it in half. The result will look like an eye balls. Repeat until you have the desired number of eyeballs.
Cut the top off of a passion fruit and scoop out the pulp and save for something fun. Place a Rambutan inside the empty passion fruit, so that it pops out like hair.
Using toothpicks, affix the rambutan and longan eyes to the passion fruit hull.
For the adult fruit goblins with arms, use small fingers from the Buddha Hand. Use the toothpicks to affix to the fruit goblins and use toothpicks as spears.
Slice tops off of the passion fruit and insert longan eye balls. This combination will give evil looking eyes. Use long curved fingers of the Buddha hand to form horns. Use toothpicks to affix the horns.
When you finish you will have enough characters to make a little Halloween battle scene. The boys (children and men) will enjoy this part.
