June 20, 2013

One of the hottest yearly events in California is the Congressional Cup Sailing Race off the Long Beach Memorial Pier. Think of one of the opening scenes of the Thomas Crown Affair, where they are racing sail boats. This is perhaps one of those events you should attend at least once in your life. This year’s race, the 49th, will feature some of the top skippers from around the world including Ted Turner (News Mogul), Ed Baird ( former America’s Cup Captain). The event is free and open to the public with best viewing from the Belmont Pier. There will be post-race parties on Friday and Saturday. You can enjoy racing from 12:30-5:00 every day.

Sponsors of the race include Stella Artois Beer and Gelson’s Supermarket who will be providing drinks and refreshment for the crew and after parties. On board some of the VIP boasts they will be pairing Beemster Vlaskaas, Bucherondin De Chevre and Humbolt Fog Cheese.

A note about athletic nutrition for the participants of the race: Like any athlete competing in a highly physical competition, proper pre-competition nutrition is critical for top physical and mental performance. During the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, rival track stars from the U.S. team noted that what they ate for breakfast could make the difference for who won a qualification race. Since then, athlete nutrition has been taken to the next level to ensure that they are mentally sharp and bodies primed for rapid and sustained physical activity. The Skippers of the Congressional Cup teams have been going through such nutrition regimens for the extremely demanding activity of competitive sailing.

I am personally sick of stodgy Sunday Brunches with ambiance music and played out quiche. A new trend is starting to emerge in the foodie scene, the rise of the hip Sunday Brunch. SideDoor in Corona Del Mar is helping to propel this movement forward, with their “SideDoor Sunday Sessions.” This hip new brunch brings together a gourmet brunch fare from acclaimed Chef Greg Harris, D.J’s spinning, and eclectic live art. Although SideDoor is not the first restaurant to introduce this concept, I have good feeling that they will nail it.

Their kick-off of the new Sunday Sessions will occur Sunday April 7th and will feature music and DJ styling from “StereoSystem Collective.” Future Sunday brunches will also feature local painters, photographers and slam poetry. They are encouraging walk-ins, so reservations are not accepted.

The menu of the Sunday Brunch is upscale gastropub and will feature items that your Grandma might consider undignified for a proper Sunday Brunch. I think their creative spin on Sunday Brunch food is brilliant. One of the dishes that caught my eye is their “Duck Confit and Waffles.” The following items have been announced for the Sunday Brunch menu:

June 20, 2013

Food and Wine Festival Palm Desert returns this weekend and it is your opportunity to taste some of the best food in the greater Palm Springs area. During this event, you will be able to taste over 45 different local restaurants and more wineries than you can sample in a single day. I attended this event last year and I had a blast watching the culinary demonstrations, meeting celebrity chefs, eating copious amounts of food, and becoming silly from great wine. See my review from last years event: http://tomsfoodieblog.com/2012/04/18/review-and-pictures-of-the-palm-desert-food-and-wine-festival-2012/

The Details

When:

March 23-24

If you are in a new relationship, you are in trouble and might find yourself eating dinner with your Mother at the local iHop. This quick post offers some quick advice for Valentine’s Day procrastinators.

Option #1 OpenTable.com is your personal consierge

At this point, most nicer restaurants are booked up between 5:30-8:30pm on valentines day. As a result you will have to call around to see who has openings or you can be smart about it. I recommend that you go to www.opentable.com and pull up all restaurants in your area and see what time slots are open. If you are lucky, you will find some restaurants with decent reservation times. See my screen shot below on how to do this.

Option #2 –Think outside the box

Stay away from places that overlook the water or stuffy places with tea lights on the table, these are the restaurants that will be booked. Look through your Facebook feed for your favorite restaurants posts; restaurants with opening will be doing heavy advertising and will often offer special meals for the day. I recommend you visit two articles written by fellow bloggers, who have some great ideas for restaurants on Valentines day.

This first one is written by my wife, who operates www.DanisDecadentdeals.com; this article covers mostly Orange County and you will find some high-end restaurants that still had openings as of this morning and some non-traditional Valentine’s restaurants.

http://danisdecadentdeals.com/2013/02/07/valentines-day-dinner-specials-in-the-orange-county-california-area/

The second article covers the South Bay of Los Angeles. This article, from www.SurfSideSam.com offers some great restaurants that you might want to check out in the Manhattan Beach area. Great restaurants in this article that I plan on visiting soon.

http://www.surfsidesam.com/?p=1149

Good luck guys!

The Automobile Club of America, one of the most respected review services, named new Five Diamond Hotels and Restaurants. This is a select list in which only .3% of AAA/CAA Approved establishments win; among the hotel winners is Montage Laguna Beach.

Although Southern California did not win any restaurant awards this year, Benu in San Francisco did make it into the the five-diamond club. I went through the menu at each of these restaurants and the common element between them is that they all have a high-end tasting menu. This Chef’s Choice micro portion tasting menu is a trend than has become mainstream for the past 2-years and it appears that AAA is rewarding restaurants who do it best. Each of the winners also featured an ingredient centric a la carte menu. After reading the menus, I’m hungry!

Le Bernardin, New York, N.Y.

“AAA Five Diamond hotels offer guests a meticulous degree of personalized attention and extensive amenities in a luxurious setting, and Five Diamond restaurants feature world-class service and imaginative menus using the finest ingredients,” said Michael Petrone, director, AAA Tourism Information Development. “These establishments consistently exceed the expectations of the most discriminating traveler – the AAA inspector — and AAA is pleased to recognize them with a Five Diamond Rating.”

Collectively visiting some 1,200 hotels and restaurants every week, AAA inspectors are in a unique position to identify emerging trends in the hospitality industry. Inspectors have observed hotels and restaurants using increasingly personalized approaches to enhance guest comfort and satisfaction. “The definition of Five Diamond luxury continues to evolve as guests seek unique experiences with intrinsic value,” said Petrone.

Experienced, highly qualified staff are required to provide the custom service today’s luxury hotel guest expects. Larger hotels, faced with the difficulties of responding to individual needs, often restructure their approach. Many use the immediacy of social media to augment the experience as luxury travelers research, purchase, engage in and reflect on their stay. Imagine tweeting your desire for a rare vintage wine and having it arrive moments later at your guestroom door.

Restaurants employ an artisanal touch to provide an individualized culinary experience in a non-obtrusive manner. Menu offerings, once complex and highly orchestrated, are now often simple concepts meticulously executed. Meals and beverages are handcrafted using seasonal, organic ingredients from local sources. Distilled or flavored ice may be one of several original effects added to an already enchanting homemade cocktail mix.

The path to a Five Diamond Rating is rigorous. Properties identified by AAA as potential candidates for the Five Diamond Rating undergo multiple unannounced evaluations by a AAA inspector and final decision by a panel of experts. In addition to the evaluation of physical attributes, potential Five Diamond establishments are subject to thorough onsite assessments of all guest services from the initial reservation through checkout for hotels and from seating to presentation for restaurants. Each area is evaluated based on level of competence, refinement and hospitality.

Noteworthy for 2013:

The Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, Colo., is the only hotel that has maintained the Five Diamond Rating for 37 consecutive years – since 1976 when AAA first introduced the Diamond Ratings for accommodations.

The Inn at Little Washington Dining Room in Washington, Va., has the longest Five Diamond restaurant tenure, 25 consecutive years, since 1988.

With two restaurant additions, Eleven Madison Park and Le Bernardin, New York now ties withCalifornia for the most AAA Five Diamond Restaurants: seven in each state.

The only new AAA Five Diamond hotel and restaurant pair is The Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island and its on-site restaurant Salt, in Fernandina Beach, Fla.

The number of Five Diamond hotels in Canada doubled to four with the addition of the Shangri-La Hotel Vancouver and The Ritz-Carlton Montreal. The country is also home to five Five Diamond Restaurants, representing nearly 10 percent of the total.

Some of you may remember my blog post last year about attending a whole sucking-pig feast at Haven Gastropub, as it was one of my favorite meals of 2012. Haven Gastropub is upping their game in 2013 and are now offering a “Head-to-Tail Dinner”

For Clarification, this is different than the Whole Suckling Pig Feast that I attended, where the suckling pig was carved table-side. This Head-to-Tail Feast takes this concept and takes it up a notch. The talented Haven Gastropub Chefs will actually create a sophisticated six-course meal utilizing the whole animal. The Chefs will create unique dishes utilizing all parts of the animal from from head to tail. You have an option of using a whole adult pig or whole lamb. This is pretty impressive from my perspective as you can really experience unique cuts and preparations. If you ever tried the food at Haven Gastropub, you know they will step outside the box and deliver on presentation and flavor. I am adding this feat to my 2013 bucket list.

According to the press release, “pricing begins at $125 per guest with the option of beer, wine or cocktail pairings starting at $50 per guest.” They require a 8-person minimum and 2-weeks notice for this feast. This is definitely not your everyday meal in terms of price; although, this is a memory-making experience you could share together with family and friends.

ABOUT HAVEN GASTROPUB
With locations in historic Old Towne Orange and Old Pasadena, Haven Gastropub is a unique concept where “pub meets gourmet grub.” Named “Best New Gastropub” by Draft Magazine, which touted it as one of three new restaurants across the country that have “breathed new life into the old gastropub concept.” Gastropub, a British term blending gastronomy and pub, sprouted in the 1990s and has seen a revival as the idea behind the concept was to provide a place where friends and family could gather in a warm comfortable setting and enjoy good conversation with quality food and spirited libations. Haven boasts a selection of beers on draught and more than 100 bottled craft beers. In addition, Haven serves more than 50 specialty single-malt whiskeys, scotches and bourbons; and a worldly wine list, with nearly 50 wines by the glass. Almost every dish on the menu has a beer or wine pairing suggestion.

The menu, created by Le Cordon Bleu-trained Executive Chef/Partner Greg Daniels, offers a blend of old world European fare with a modern American twist. The result is a refreshing combination of treasured dishes from around the world fused with familiar stateside staples.
